Our Story
We are two brothers who spent our early childhood summers working on our grandparent’s ranch in the American West. As kids, we would watch wide-eyed, as cowboys competed in rodeos and earned giant shiny belt buckles commemorating the achievements of champions.
The American custom of “trophy buckles” have origins in military traditions that date back to the Civil War, when U.S. cavalry units wore shiny buckles into battle. After the war, veterans brought the tradition west. Now these trophy buckles are used to recognize achievements, commemorate milestones, or honor service. These buckles are revered symbols of honor and prestige -reflecting the history, tradition and essence of competition- where determination and grit converge. They are a testament to sacrifice, perseverance, dedication, and respect for tradition and legacy. It is with this time-honored tradition in mind that we created The Varsity Buckle Co.
What started as a genuine hobby - collecting vintage buckles at markets and online auctions – soon evolved into the creation of our company. The more we collected, the more we acknowledged the need for stylish, yet gritty buckles that represented the spirit of both the western trophy buckle, as well as the spirit of collegiate sports and competition. By taking cues from the silver-smithed buckles of our storied American past – we commemorate that same iconic symbol of tradition, victory and accomplishment.
We want to share our vision with other passionate fans, students or alumni - and help connect people to their personal history, their community, and their shared school legacy. We aim to commemorate and celebrate those special moments, or important years - that shape our lives. Whether it’s the winning bowl game, or the remembrance of graduation – we help keep your stories and memories alive.
